Prices you see locally are usually in quetzales, while your journey is quoted in US dollars. Exchange rates move, so we never publish a rate we cannot verify at the time you read it.

Cards, cash and ATMs

Cities and established venues generally accept cards, while small local vendors, markets and community operators are more comfortable with cash. Carrying a mix is the practical answer.

• Notify your bank of travel dates before departure
• Keep smaller notes for markets, tips and small vendors
• Ask your guide before relying on a card in smaller communities

Planning your spending money

Because accommodation, breakfast, private transportation and selected experiences are already part of the journey, your out-of-pocket spending is mostly lunches, dinners, drinks, souvenirs, optional extras and tips.
